Devendra Fadnavis: Love or Hate him, but you can not ignore him.

Amidst the dynamic tapestry of Indian politics, Maharashtra stands as a pivotal battleground, and at its epicentre is a man named Devendra Fadnavis. Fadnavis's rollercoaster ride from the political corridors of Nagpur to the chief ministerial office of Maharashtra and then reluctantly accepting the demotion of being the Deputy Chief Minister in the Shinde-led government as directed by Delhi serves as a testament to his strategic prowess as well as unwavering dedication to the party. As the assembly elections draw nearer and the BJP endeavours to strengthen its foothold in Maharashtra, Fadnavis emerges as an indispensable asset for the state and the party.

Fadnavis faced significant criticism from within and outside the party for the BJP's lacklustre performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and the subsequent political shifts. He offered his resignation, taking moral responsibility, but the central leadership urged him to continue. However, I have a different perspective. Blaming Fadnavis for the BJP’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections is an oversimplification. Many factors were at play, including internal party dynamics; it's unfair to hold him solely responsible, especially when he wasn't directly involved in ticket distribution or campaign strategies. It was a Delhi show all the way. I am even surprised by his offer to resign. I don't understand what or who prompted him to do so.

Fadnavis also faced challenges over the administration's handling of the Maratha reservation issue, which saw mixed public and political reactions. Allies within the state government have exacerbated the situation, each pursuing their agendas to weaken Fadnavis's position; it was a deliberate attempt by Yuti partners to corner Fadnavis and the BJP. While one partner is busy instigating the Maratha reservation movement, another works with the OBC block.

Devendra Fadnavis's current political situation can be compared to a seasoned cricketer enduring a temporary decline in form. Like a batsman struggling with a string of low scores, Fadnavis faces challenges both within his party and from opposition forces. A recent example is a slew of personal attacks levelled against him by Anil Deshmukh of the NCP Sharad Pawar faction and a personal attack led by Uddhav Thackeray. However, as any great player knows, a slump often precedes a remarkable comeback. Fadnavis aims to regain momentum in time for the upcoming state elections.

Fadnavis's political journey is not just about his early involvement and rapid rise within the BJP but also a testament to his leadership potential. Born into a politically active family, his initiation into politics began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) student wing. His tenure as the youngest mayor of Nagpur at 27 highlighted his leadership qualities and set the stage for his significant role in state politics.

Fadnavis's rise within the BJP was characterised by a focus on building organisational strength and mobilising grassroots support. His close ties with the RSS provided a solid ideological foundation, while his pragmatic approach to governance earned him favour with the central BJP leadership.

As Chief Minister, Fadnavis's governance style was marked by a strategic focus on infrastructure development, water conservation, and urban transformation. His vision and strategic planning led to expanding the Mumbai Metro, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway. These projects, aimed at improving connectivity, boosting economic growth, and positioning Maharashtra as a hub of modern infrastructure, instil a sense of optimism about the state's future development.

Another critical initiative under Fadnavis's leadership was the "Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan," a program focused on water conservation to mitigate the effects of drought in the state. This initiative was crucial in addressing the agrarian crisis and providing relief to farmers, a significant demographic in Maharashtra.

Fadnavis also prioritised urban development, particularly in Mumbai, with projects like the Coastal Road and the redevelopment of Dharavi. His administration's efforts to increase financial transparency and streamline governance helped maintain Maharashtra's robust fiscal health.

Fadnavis's role in consolidating the BJP's base in Maharashtra is significant. Traditionally dominated by regional parties like the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Maharashtra presented a challenging landscape for the BJP. Fadnavis's leadership was instrumental in helping the BJP emerge as a formidable force, breaking the monopoly of these regional players. His ability to connect with a diverse electorate, including urban and rural voters, is vital to the BJP's long-term strategy.

As the BJP seeks to regain control of Maharashtra, Fadnavis's experience and leadership skills are invaluable. His potential to play a significant role at the national level within the BJP offers hope for the party's future and his supporters.
